There is no doubt that I love me some coconut oil. With a
raw, vegan and a paleo in the house, coconut oil has become a serious staple in
our home. I use it on our skin, in our food…it’s everywhere in my home and
there’s a good reason why. It’s healthy, safe and versatile. I have 5, well now
4, jars in my cabinets right now and trust me when I say, I’ll run out within
the next month or two. I’ve tried
several brands, but my favorite brand has always been and will always be Tropical Traditions' Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil. I find their coconut oil to be…what’s the word…genuine?
Organic? Not Crisco? The coconut oil just matches the visual I get of the
ending product every time I read the description on how it is made.
“The
fresh coconut meat is shredded (wet milled), and then cold-pressed using the
water from inside the coconuts to make coconut milk. The milk is then allowed
to sit for about half a day, while the oil naturally separates from the heavier
water. The oil is then filtered from the curds (coconut solids). No chemical or
high-heat treatment is used”. - Tropical Traditions: "What Virgin Coconut Oil is and How it is made".
Can’t you just see it?
Another reason why I fell in love with Tropical Traditions
is the fact that their coconut oil is sourced and made from family-owned,
coconut farms in the Philippines – a country close to my heart; my mom’s home
country. It’s also the country where Tropical Traditions' roots lie. What
started as a small idea to use a traditional method to make fresh coconut oil
turned into a demanding business. Instead of abandoning their roots to start
mass producing, they decided to extend them (their roots) and increase the
number of families to support. It’s an amazing story that you can hear about
more by watching the below video. For me, if my purchase means supporting a
family in the Philippines, then I’m already 50% sold.
As for the other 50%, the quality, texture, taste and mouth
feel says it all. This stuff is edible with a spoon for goodness sake! Not something
I can honestly say about other coconut oils.
So why do I use it you ask? Well, just Google benefits
and/or uses of coconut oil and I think you will see just exactly why I use
coconut oil. Coconut oil contains good for you fats that support the body; the
high smoke point makes it ideal for cooking and baking; it’s a great
all-natural skin and hair moisturizer; and best of all, it’s not over-processed
like vegetable oils or at a high risk of being genetically modified. It’s, dare
I say, the purest form of plant-based oil that you can get.
As for its use, well it has hundreds. My family uses it on our skin
as a moisturizer. I use it as a makeup remover and facial cleanser while my
daughter uses it to keep her eczema moisturized. We also use it in a lot of
recipes both raw and cooked. I like to use it to sauté or bake. I add it to
smoothies and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE making raw chocolates with it! There are so
many uses for coconut oil in the kitchen alone. To learn more about how to use
it in the kitchen, just watch the video below.
